SUMMARY:Pricing for Perennials Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From ornamentals and berries to fruit trees and medicinal herbs\, perennial crops are an attractive way for farmers to diversify their offerings and shift their production schedules\, but they’re not always a bed of rosaceae. Join us for a FREE farmer-to-farmer workshop next week to get financial and operational insights to help make perennial crops a successful part of your farm. \nRegister here. \nMore info:\nThis workshop will feature presentations from two leading local farms: The Farm Connection\, an edible\, medicinal\, and native plant nursery and garden center in Marshall\, NC; and J&M Farms\, a family-owned mountain apple orchard in Hendersonville – who both recently graduated from Mountain BizWorks’ ScaleUp WNC program. The presentations will be followed by Q&A\, a roundtable discussion\, and FREE lunch. \nThis workshop is made possible through a collaboration with Mountain BizWorks and ASAP\, and funded via a grant from the Southern Risk Management Education Center. Appalachian Grown certified farms who register and attend this workshop will receive a workshop stipend of $27.75 to help cover some of their off-farm time.

SUMMARY:ASAP's CSA Fair
DESCRIPTION:ASAP’s annual CSA Fair will take place on March 8\, 3-5:30 p.m.\, at the YWCA of Asheville\, highlighting farms with a CSA pickup location in Buncombe County. In addition to traditional produce CSAs\, the fair will include farms with specialty CSA products\, such as meat or flowers. The fair is relaxed setting where attendees chat with farmers about their products\, growing practices\, payment structure\, and more. Attendees can sign up for a CSA during the fair or follow up with farmers later. The fair will also feature local food tastings and activities for kids\, as well as produce and food products available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public. The YWCA is located at 185 S. French Broad Ave. in Asheville. Participating farms will be announced in late February. \nCSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It connects you\, the consumer\, directly with a local farm by purchasing weekly “shares” of a farm’s harvest upfront at the beginning of a season. With that commitment early on\, the farmer is able to invest in the growing season. The traditional seasonal CSA is similar to a subscription. You’ll receive a regular—most often weekly—share of produce or other farm goods at the height of their season. Learn more about CSAs here!

SUMMARY:Selling to Schools: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:With schools an integral part of our communities and an important source of food for many children\, they would seem a natural connection for local purchasing. Unfortunately\, school food systems are complicated and layered with requirements that make direct purchases from farms challenging. Join ASAP and child nutrition professionals from the region to learn more about how procurement works in NC K-12 schools\, as well as area preschools. This workshop will include an overview of models for local procurement\, as well as address opportunities and challenges for selling to schools in your community. Register here. \nAfter the workshop component of this meeting\, ASAP will host a virtual Grower-Buyer Meeting for farms and schools. Grower-buyer meetings are a chance for farmers and producers to introduce themselves to potential buyers (restaurants\, grocers\, schools\, etc.) and discuss products and potential interest. There are no promises made and no contracts signed; it’s just a chance to open a door and follow up later. Virtual Grower-Buyer Meetings have proven to be a really convenient and efficient way to (virtually) meet face-to-face with farms. The best part of these virtual Grower-Buyer Meeting is how easy it is for buyers. Essentially all you have to do is turn on your computer the day of the event. \nIf you would like to meet with farms who are interested in selling to your school system or pre-school\, please take 5-10 minutes to complete our brief buyer questionnaire. The questionnaire will serve as your RSVP to the Grower-Buyer component of the event. \nWorkshop is free\, but registration is required via Zoom.
