He was born and raised in the foothills of western North Carolina. He has always had a passion for nature and the outdoors but did not discover his love for birds until he saw a Painted Bunting off the coast of North Carolina on an early summer morning. Soon after this eye-opening experience\, Clifton had the opportunity to participate in a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course in Brazil where he was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Following this experience\, Clifton went to Appalachian State University where he majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a focus in Ornithology. \nClifton worked for various ornithological research projects after college where he banded and nest searched for a wide range of avian species in Peru\, Colombia\, and Nicaragua. He also worked a couple seasons for the NC Audubon Society studying the Golden-winged Warbler on its breeding grounds in northwestern NC. For the past 7 years Clifton has worked for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as the Mountain Wildlife Diversity Technician. His duties include conducting surveying\, monitoring\, habitat management\, and public outreach for wildlife conservation projects focusing on species of greatest conservation need that occur in western North Carolina. He mostly focuses on birds\, flying squirrels\, and Hellbender salamanders. He also works for Ventures Birding Tours\, a birding and natural history tour company based out of Asheville\, NC as a bird watching guide. He leads tours in western NC but also all over North and South America. He currently lives in Asheville\, NC with his girlfriend and is the father of 7-year-old son\, Banks. He does not have any inside pets but the bears and turkeys that pass through his yard regularly suffice.

Cattle have been seen as eco-villains for a long time. What if they can help save us from catastrophic climate change? \nSee the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PpPmkSAiEw \nMore about Hickory Nut Gap:\nAbout Hickory Nut Gap: Hickory Nut Gap Meats is a pioneering provider of regeneratively raised meats\, sourcing from family farms across the southeastern United States. Hickory Nut Gap values and respects the complex relationships between humans and nature\, supplying 100% grassfed\, grass-finished beef\, and pasture raised\, heritage breed pork to retailers\, restaurants\, and caring customers. All Hickory Nut Gap meats are humanely raised and never given antibiotics or added hormones. Hickory Nut Gap products are available at Whole Foods Markets regionally\, in addition to Ingles Markets\, Harris Teeter\, Earth Fare\, FreshDirect\, local and regional grocery cooperatives\, restaurants\, and specialty food stores across the Southeastern US. Visitors are welcome at Hickory Nut Gap Farm\, located at 57 Sugar Hollow Road in Fairview\, North Carolina\, which features a farm store\, events\, and opportunities to learn more about regenerative agriculture. \nEarly Praise for Roots So Deep:\n“What I like so much about these films is the genuine compassion and understanding shown for farmers\, no matter how they farm. Peter Byck is a terrific interviewer\, even of people who view the world from different perspectives. Anyone who wants to know what regenerative agriculture can do\, in theory and in practice\, will watch these films with pleasure and admiration for the hard work that goes into producing food.” –Marion Nestle\, Professor of Nutrition\, Food Studies\, and Public Health\, Emerita\, New York University\, and author of books about food politics. \n“This is\, hands-down\, the best agriculture filmmaking I’ve ever seen. The characters are all so likable and captivating\, the graphics are stunning\, and I learned a ton about ecology… but none of that would matter without Peter Byck’s soul and empathy as storyteller.” –Bill Weir\, CNN \nLocal to Asheville? Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in a Farm Tour at Hickory Nut Gap Farm the morning after the event. Meet at the farm at 9am for the free tour.

SUMMARY:4th Annual HarvestFest Supporting ASAP
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Olivette’s Riverside Park on Saturday August 23rd for a very special benefit show in support of ASAP’s Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables program. HarvestFest is a celebration of local farmers\, community and music. Doors open at 3pm with family games and activities and live music. \nIn honor of our local farmers and all they do to sustain our community\, all farmers and their families will have free entry to the event. There will also be a VIF section (Very Important Farmers) that will pamper our farmers during the busy harvest season. \nAll ticket proceeds will go towards the ASAP Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables program. \nASAP’s Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables program offers a match on dollars spent by SNAP customers at participating farmers markets with tokens that can be used for produce. Many EBT shoppers explained that the program eases concerns over having enough food each month. One shopper explained\, “It has significantly reduced the stress of managing the little amount of money given per month for EBT. I can make choices that allow me to eat more vegetables and eggs than I otherwise could afford.” Farmers market managers and vendors also noted the benefits of the program. Many note that this leads to ongoing relationships with shoppers and allows them to grow their business with loyal customers. One vendor shared\, “It has not only increased my sales\, it has allowed me to interact and build relationships with customers who would normally be outside my business’ demographic.” Another farmer shared\, “This investment quite literally nourishes the community for both the producer and consumer of farmer’s market produce!” \nWe are honored to have the opportunity to celebrate and support this great program with a fun filled day of music\, activities\, and nature. HarvestFest is produced by Olivette Riverside Community and Farm and Chatt Hills Music. \nTickets are $25 a ticket (Kids\, Farmers & Farmer Families are free!). Purchase tickets here.

When half of the garden’s donation beds flooded\, we moved forward with a renewed vision\, transforming the washed out space into a blooming field of flowers. \nWhether you have been a gardener here since its start\, or you have never been and want to learn more\, everyone is welcome! \nLearn why the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden fills a vital\, unique role in the Swannanoa Valley and how you can help sustain our mission of getting locally grown\, nutritious food to our community through our partnership with Bounty & Soul. We are excited to share the bounty of the garden\, celebrate successes\, and take a look into the future. We look forward to seeing you there!
