SUMMARY:Mushroom Production & Log Inoculation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join BRWIA and Lively Up Farm for a workshop all about sustainable mushroom production! \nGrowing mushrooms can be a low-input\, high-revenue enterprise for farmers and homesteaders. This workshop will cover species of wood and mushrooms that are most compatible\, when to cut trees\, and how to inoculate and stack logs for maximum harvest over many years. Participants will also see and get to practice the whole process of drilling holes\, plugging holes and waxing the logs. Feel free to ask questions throughout the process\, and come prepared to get a little dirty! \nThis is a donation-based workshop. If you’d like to purchase inoculated logs to take home with you\, please add them to your ticket during the checkout process! Logs are limited\, so if you want to make sure you can take one home\, please order ahead of time.

We strive to make our workshops accessible to all; please contact lucille.nelson@tobm.org to inquire about reduce ticket prices. \nAbout: Learn the basic principles of fruit tree and shrub pruning before participating in a demonstration implementing these practices on Apples\, Blueberries\, Hazelnuts\, Pears\, and Pawpaws growing at the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden. If you have pruning tools\, bring them! Community tools will be available for practice. \nOur teacher:\nEthnobiologist Marc Williams has studied the people\, plant\, mushroom and microbe interconnection intensively while learning to employ botanicals and other life forms for food\, medicine\, and beauty in a regenerative manner. His training includes a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies concentrating in Sustainable Agriculture with a minor in Business from Warren Wilson College and a Master’s degree in Appalachian Studies concentrating in Sustainable Development with a minor in Geography and Planning from Appalachian State University. He has spent over two decades working at a multitude of restaurants and various farms and has traveled throughout 30 countries in Central/North/South America and Europe as well as all 50 states of the USA. Marc has visited over 200 botanical gardens and research institutions during this process while taking tens of thousands of pictures of representative plants and other entities. He has taught hundreds of classes to thousands of students about the marvelous world of people and their interface with other organisms while working with over 100 organizations and particularly as a key contributor to the work of United Plant Savers\, Plants and Healers International and online at the website www.botanyeveryday.com. Marc’s greatest hope is that this effort may help improve our current challenging global ecological situation.

DESCRIPTION:This is the largest commercial vegetable grower event in the region with a high quality educational program put together by vegetable extension specialist/agents at NC State University. SUMMARY:Planning and Planting Food Forest Systems on Contour Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Along with Contour Lines Corp we will be leading the planting\nof a 3-acre diversified food forest which will feature a number\nof fruit trees and native support trees planted on contour in a\nsystem of berms and swales. This is a unique demonstration\nproject on conservation land\, which will be managed in\nperpetuity so that we can all learn about the numerous benefits\nand beauty of perennial agroforestry and food forest systems. \nFolks will receive a solid introduction on how to plan and plant a food forest agroforestry site that includes hundreds of\nfruit and support trees on a berm and swale contour system. Some species we will be planting include Black Locust\, Willow\,\nCottonwood\, Elderberry\, Mulberry\, Persimmon\, Apple\, Pear\, Blueberry\, Fig and Peaches. \nJoin us\, rain or shine\, for all or any part of the day to learn\, observe\, and take part in planting if you choose. Please bring a\nwater bottle\, gloves\, raincoat/work clothes if you’re planting; tools will be provided. \nLunch will be provided midway between our morning classroom portion\, and then the rest of the day will be hands-on work.
