SUMMARY:Growing Food on Slopes: April Session
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Bountiful Cities\, Organic Growers School is excited to offer a series of hands-on workshops at Pearson Garden Food Hub in the Montford neighborhood in Asheville. Over 3 sessions\, we will explore planning\, installing infrastructure\, and planting food-producing plants in a sloped system; we will build a small hillside orchard to practice the concepts and skills. \nWe’ll cover: what and where to grow based on soil\, sunlight\, slope\, and water access; how to measure and install swales and terraces; how to maintain soil quality and prevent erosion; cultivating food from unlikely spots; and how to keep your hillside garden thriving long-term. \nIf you’ve ever wanted to grow food in your backyard or community but found our WNC hillside landscapes challenging\, this series is for you! \nThis project will support Bountiful Cities’ ongoing community-centered efforts to build long-term food security and permanent food access for all people by expanding food production at Pearson Garden. Help contribute to the cause!

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Food Forest
DESCRIPTION:Growing your own food is one thing. Growing a self-sustaining ecosystem that feeds you\, your family\, and the wildlife around you — that’s something else entirely. \nA food forest is one of the most rewarding things you can put on your property. It’s also one of the most misunderstood. Adam Bigelow is here to change that. \nThis class covers the fundamentals of food forest design from the ground up — how to think about your land\, choose the right plants for our mountain climate\, and layer everything together so nature does most of the work for you. \nWhat You’ll Cover: \nSite Selection: How to read your property (sun\, slope\, soil\, and drainage) and identify where a food forest will actually thrive\nPlant Selection: Which fruit trees\, shrubs\, and ground covers perform at our elevation and in our acidic Appalachian soils\nCompanion Planting: How to pair plants strategically so they support each other’s growth\, deter pests\, and build soil health over time\nLayering Your Forest: Understanding the canopy\, understory\, shrub\, and ground layers and how to stack them for maximum yield and minimum maintenance\nEcosystem Benefits: How a well-designed food forest supports native pollinators\, improves water retention\, and gives back to the landscape around it\nMaintenance Without the Misery: What ongoing care actually looks like once your food forest is established\nClass is held on our grounds with plenty of time for questions\, conversation\, and the kind of tangents that only happen when someone genuinely loves what they’re teaching.
