SUMMARY:Free Barn Dance & Volunteer Fair
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Hickory Nut Gap Farm Big Barn\, hosted with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on Saturday October 26th for a free community event\, a Barn Dance & Volunteer Fair! We NEED THIS. Take some time to relax and unwind from recovery efforts\, AND help sustain and support WNC’s farmers\, towns\, hills and hollers for months to come. \nThe event is in the Big Barn from 12pm-6pm\, and our Farm Store is open for business! \n– Free Live music 1pm-5pm and dancing with local youth band the Lucky Buckeyes & our favorite square dance squallers\, the Old Charlotte Highwaymen.\n– Cretaceously craveable eats by Grush’s Cajun Dino Grill.\n– Beer proceeds will go to ASAP Farmers’ Emergency Relief Fund.\n– We will have a Funding Wall\, full of posters with QR codes linking attendees directly to organizations\, local businesses\, families and friends who need our community’s financial help to stay afloat and rebuild.\n– Local pumpkins\, squash\, apples\, fresh pressed cider and seasonal offerings are back!\n– Hay Rides & Pony rides 11am-4pm\, proceeds benefit Project HNG! \nRight now the big picture of what our region is facing is still being painted – community spirit is high\, neighbors across the country are flying\, driving\, running\, emailing and calling in with their time\, talent and treasure. But the locals know\, we’re in this for the long haul – we need volunteers to commit regularly for months to come. To dispense resources to the communities who can’t get to them\, to flush toilets for citizens who don’t have the strength\, to gut homes that just can’t house anyone right now. The messy\, heart-rending business of rebuilding our lives in the wake of Hurricane Helene. \nWe will be hosting an ongoing Volunteer Fair for all of you wonderful non-profits\, local farms and gardens\, community-organized groups\, local businesses-turned-emergency-community-hubs\, and more. We hear you have the resources\, you just need the helping hand. Please contact megan.auten@hickorynutgap.com to send a volunteer or staff member to table at this event. It’s a great chance to get attendees acquainted with who you are and how important your mission is\, and get them to sign up right there and then for weeks and months to come. \nHNG has WIFI thanks to a generously donated Starlink\, so attendees can pull up their calendars as they walk from table to table. We will also provide paper calendars so they can pin their schedule to the wall or the fridge. \nIf you have a group you feel like could use some support\, whether from donation or volunteer work\, please contact megan.auten@hickorynutgap.com they will be added to our invite list and our Funding Wall – we hope to see you then\, on Saturday 10/26 for a little fun\, a little togetherness and a lot of hope.

SUMMARY:Pricing for Perennials Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From ornamentals and berries to fruit trees and medicinal herbs\, perennial crops are an attractive way for farmers to diversify their offerings and shift their production schedules\, but they’re not always a bed of rosaceae. The presentations will be followed by Q&A\, a roundtable discussion\, and FREE lunch. \nThis workshop is made possible through a collaboration with Mountain BizWorks and ASAP\, and funded via a grant from the Southern Risk Management Education Center. Appalachian Grown certified farms who register and attend this workshop will receive a workshop stipend of $27.75 to help cover some of their off-farm time.

SUMMARY:Dr. John Wilson Community Garden 20th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join the passionate gardeners and volunteers of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden on September 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for the garden’s 20th Anniversary Celebration! The evening will include an original play created and performed by community members; live music; a delicious dinner prepared by local restaurants and gardeners\, and a cash bar. Tickets are $40 in advance\, $50 at the door. Student (college and grade school) tickets $25. Children 6 years and under are free. A silent auction will offer local adventures\, activities\, and services that will enrich your year spiritually\, mentally\, and physically\, and you can test your luck on three unique raffle baskets. \nThe original play will be this event’s crown jewel. With the help of local community theater playwright and director Jerry Pope\, the garden’s community has woven a tapestry of stories from a myriad of voices. The resulting compilation of memories is sure to make you laugh\, cry\, and reminisce! These stories touch the humanity in all of us and the endless connections that we have with the universe around us. \nThe goal for the 20th Anniversary Celebration is to raise $20\,000! Proceeds from this event provide financial support for the garden’s interns so that they can focus on learning good growing techniques and in-turn share that knowledge with others and give back to the community. Proceeds also allow the garden to bring in excellent educators for workshops to educate the community about gardening\, native and medicinal plants\, and more. The rest of the revenue will be set aside as seed money for a new structure to replace the current barn. The community hopes that the new structure can include processing capabilities\, educational space\, cold storage\, and an office for the full-time garden manager. Additional donations are enthusiastically welcomed to help realize this vision! \nProviding food for hundreds of local families\, the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden is a vital resource in helping reduce food insecurity in the Swannanoa Valley. Each year\, residents and volunteers come together to grow fresh produce that is distributed to families in need. The garden relies heavily on the work of interns to assist in the growing process and to educate the public on sustainable growing techniques. This fundraiser serves as one of the best opportunities for the community to come together and learn about the purpose and benefits of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden. This event is also one of the best ways to support the community garden and keep it up and running for years to come. \nIn addition to growing produce for the community and providing space for residents to garden\, the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden tends dozens of fruit and nut trees\, grows many native and medicinal plants\, helps to maintain greenways\, operates a composting station for the Town\, and supports a full-time garden manager position. \nThe Dr. John Wilson Community Garden is located at 99 White Pine Drive in Black Mountain and is a program of Black Mountain Recreation and Parks. It is supported by the Friends of the Community Gardens. \nFor more information about this year’s event or to purchase tickets visit the event website at https://bmtcommunitygardens.org/20th-anniversary-celebration/. To get involved\, please contact Lucille Nelson at lucille.nelson@tobm.org. For information about donations and sponsorships please reach out to info@bmtcommunitygardens.org

SUMMARY:Ani & Wanei Culture Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Ani & Wanei Cultural Festival celebrates the rich cultural milieu of Cherokee and Appalachian heritage in this humming mountain landscape. \nOn September 22nd from noon until 4:00 PM the traditions of Cherokee and Appalachian art\, music\, and dance will fill the Big Barn Venue at the Hickory Nut Gap Farm\, in Fairview. \nThe Ani & Wanei Culture Fest brings two principal mountain cultures together in music\, art\, and food. There is fun and learning for the whole family! \nHere\, you can try out some Cherokee words\, taste frybread tacos\, or even participate in a traditional Cherokee Friendship dance. Relax and listen to Appalachian Bluegrass or the haunting sounds of a Native American flute. Browse the traditional wares of painter\, potter\, weaver\, beader\, jeweler\, and carver. \nMusicians will include: Jarrett Wildcat – Cherokee flautist and storyteller and Andrew Wakefield – Appalachian bluegrass guitarist. The Warriors of Anikituhwa will share dances. The Igali Puppets will teach Cherokee words and the Cherokee Royalty\, including Miss Cherokee\, will share thoughts on important issues that they contact. Artists will offer pottery\, baskets\, beading\, jewelry\, woodcarving\, and paintings. There will be a Native American Food truck\, face painting\, and the specialty farm store will open its doors to all. \nThis celebration of culture stems from a new trailhead sign that will be unveiled at the event. The sign will soon grace the entry to the Strawberry Gap trail in Gerton. This trail\, managed by Conserving Carolina\, represents a unique paradigm for walking in the U.S. Like in European countries\, private land there is available for public use. The trail is a metaphor for the intercultural connection depicted in the Ani & Wanei Cultural Fest.
