SUMMARY:Chicken Processing Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:We are inviting volunteers to help process chickens here at Wild East Farm on July 2nd at 8:30am. It typically takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete the batch (150 birds)\, but the exact timing will depend on the number of volunteers and everyone’s pace. \nThe process begins with live chickens and ends with cleaned whole birds in the refrigerator. \nWe take every effort to process our animals efficiently\, safely\, and with respect for the animal. We move at a brisk pace to ensure minimal stress on the animals. Volunteers need to be prepared to abide by those principles and participate in any part of the process while working with the team. Our goal is that you become comfortable and confident in the process\, build skills\, and learn a lot while you are here! \nWe provide refreshments (snacks and drinks) and volunteers can head home with a whole chicken\, ready to cook. Our chickens are rotated daily on pasture and fed 100% organic feed. \nVolunteers will be asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival. \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Plant Propagation Class
DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves free plants! Join us this Saturday 5/20/2023 at 10am at Phat Ninja Foodforest\, 43 Bull Mountain Road\, 28805 and learn the different methods to quickly multiply a variety of different plants for your garden/landscape.\nYou will leave this class with cuttings and all the knowledge to go home and take cuttings of your own. We will have a variety of mother plants for understory berry bushes available as well. \nI have found that when we start adding food bearing shrubs\, bushes and trees to our landscape\, an addiction sets in. After a trip or two to the nursery the shock sets in of what it will cost to build a foodforest. Nature makes it much more affordable when we observe her patterns. We began planting our foodforest while struggling financially over a decade ago. We wanted a lush food filled landscape but began to understand what plants cost and didn’t see a viable option.\nOne day while walking my dog I stopped to talk to a friend that was pruning his bushes. He gave me some fig\, gooseberry and jostaberry prunings and said to plant them in a medium and keep them moist and they would grow news plants. I thought he was full of fertilizer but sure enough\, even after they were forgotten and neglected for a couple months\, half showed up that summer as healthy plants! They are still here producing food and new plants over a decade later.\nWe have become passionate about sharing the surplus and we now have a small greenhouse set up for hardwood\, softwood and semi hardwood cuttings \nClass runs 10am to noon. Fee is $20 due at start of class\, payment accepted via cash\, Venmo\, Paypal\, Cashapp to Phatninjafoodforest. Classes are held rain or shine. Parking available next door at the Asheville Mennonite Church.

SUMMARY:Trial to Table - Spring Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Our Trial to Table events are a chance for us to showcase crops and varieties from our farm trials via the talented hands of local chefs. We challenge our chefs to be inspired by our farm trials and to be creative with their dishes. The food is always delicious and our hope is that you experience something new and begin to rethink what our regional food system can offer. \nOur Spring Celebration will focus on root flours and alternative seed flours. We grow achira\, yacon\, cassava\, ube\, yam\, sweet potato\, turmeric\, ginger\, arrowroot and more. All these tropical roots make great flours so we are bringing together bakers and pastry chefs to show off these crops! Expect something creative and delicious. \nTicket price includes two small plates from each chef (8 plates total). We’ll also be running a Utopian Seed Project tasting table to show off some of these ingredients in their pure form. A note on pricing transparency: we want these events to be as accessible as possible and so have a flexible pricing policy\, if you’re able to pay more than $50 then great\, if you can’t then that’s great to.

SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid for Farmers

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a national program that employs a 8-hour training to teach a 5-step tool to identify and respond to signs of mental illness\, substance use\, and mental health crisis. MHFA provides signs and symptoms of mental illness\, how to help\, and training on crisis intervention. This training is offered through NC Agromedicine Institute (the Institute) and the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network-NC (FRSAN-NC). The mission of the Institute is to promote the health and safety of farmers\, fishermen\, foresters\, their workers and their families through research\, prevention/intervention\, and education/outreach. SUMMARY:Lavender Transplant Volunteer Work Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a volunteer work weekend at our new farm and community in Sandymush\, NC — Spiral Mountain. \nSpiral Mountain is a 34-acre farm with five cabins. We envision people living in community together here and growing much of our own food\, including both annual vegetables and permaculture perennials. We also envision growing lots of native plants\, whether edible\, medicinal\, or just beautiful. And\, of course\, we envision growing a field of English lavender. \nDuring this work weekend\, we will transplant several hundred five-year-old lavender plants into the field at Spiral Mountain. \nIf you are interested in being involved with the goings-on at Spiral Mountain in some capacity\, this work weekend would be a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other. We invite you to join us\, whether it’s just for a day\, for several days and nights\, or for the whole weekend. \nWe have roughly 12 beds we can offer volunteers in cabins with electricity\, plumbing\, kitchens\, and bathrooms. These cabins are fancy (by my standards). If you’d like a bed\, please say so when you RSPV. We’ll reserve beds for people on a first come first serve basis. Volunteers are also welcome to camp on the land if you’d prefer. \nAlso\, we’ll feed you! Three square meals a day. (If you’d like to bring your own snacks or other foodstuffs to share\, please do. I always like to bring my own snacks. I get it.) \n*Please be aware that Spiral Mountain has lots of bugs\, bees\, ticks\, dogs\, goats\, sheep\, cows\, horses\, ducks\, chickens\, turkeys\, pigs\, etc.\, either on site or nearby. We also have a no-chemical policy — even for bees. Which means there are bees nests that we simply respect. If this doesn’t work for you\, then volunteering here probably isn’t a good fit. \nThank you\, friends! I look forward to seeing you on Spiral Mountain! \nDirections: Spiral Mountain is at the very end of Randall Cove Rd. in Leicester\, NC. We’re not on google maps\, yet. The road is a small\, twisty dirt road. Keep going until you think you must have surely gone too far\, and then keep going some more. Once you turn onto Surrett Cove Rd.\, follow the signs for “Randall Glen” up the hill. Randall Glen is our closest neighbor (and they are on Google maps)\, but they are not affiliated with Spiral Mountain. You’ll pass through Randall Glen to get here\, and sometimes\, you’ll need to navigate through the farm animals (including Pyrenees dogs) carefully. If you get lost along the way\, many of us do not have cell service on the mountaintop\, but you can try calling Puma at 336-977-1679. Thank y’all! We can’t wait to see you!
