SUMMARY:Morning Tour of the NC State Hop Yard-New Varieties
DESCRIPTION:Come see the progress being made in breeding new hop varieties for the Southeast. Join our breeder\, Dr. Luping Qu\, in the hop yard where he will describe his hop breeding program and compare his new lines with popular commercial varieties. \nHop yields are low in North Carolina because commercially available varieties were bred for northern latitudes. To make hop production economically feasible for North Carolina farmers\, we need varieties that produce high yields of good quality hops. \nThis event is open to anyone interested in hops\, but with an emphasis on growers\, brewers\, and other users of locally grown hops. This event will take place rain or shine. \nSponsorships are available (contact Margaret_Bloomquist@ncsu.edu). \nAttendance is free\, but please pre-register. \nFor more information on our Research and Extension Program visit our website www.NCHerb.org \nDonate to our program: https://newcropsorganics.ces.ncsu.edu/funding-and-support/

SUMMARY:Chicken Processing Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:We are inviting volunteers to help process chickens here at Wild East Farm on July 2nd at 8:30am. It typically takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete the batch (150 birds)\, but the exact timing will depend on the number of volunteers and everyone’s pace. \nThe process begins with live chickens and ends with cleaned whole birds in the refrigerator. \nWe take every effort to process our animals efficiently\, safely\, and with respect for the animal. We move at a brisk pace to ensure minimal stress on the animals. Volunteers need to be prepared to abide by those principles and participate in any part of the process while working with the team. Our goal is that you become comfortable and confident in the process\, build skills\, and learn a lot while you are here! \nWe provide refreshments (snacks and drinks) and volunteers can head home with a whole chicken\, ready to cook. Our chickens are rotated daily on pasture and fed 100% organic feed. \nVolunteers will be asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival. \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Plant Propagation Class
DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves free plants! Join us this Saturday 5/20/2023 at 10am at Phat Ninja Foodforest\, 43 Bull Mountain Road\, 28805 and learn the different methods to quickly multiply a variety of different plants for your garden/landscape.\nYou will leave this class with cuttings and all the knowledge to go home and take cuttings of your own. We will have a variety of mother plants for understory berry bushes available as well. \nI have found that when we start adding food bearing shrubs\, bushes and trees to our landscape\, an addiction sets in. After a trip or two to the nursery the shock sets in of what it will cost to build a foodforest. Nature makes it much more affordable when we observe her patterns. We began planting our foodforest while struggling financially over a decade ago. We wanted a lush food filled landscape but began to understand what plants cost and didn’t see a viable option.\nOne day while walking my dog I stopped to talk to a friend that was pruning his bushes. He gave me some fig\, gooseberry and jostaberry prunings and said to plant them in a medium and keep them moist and they would grow news plants. I thought he was full of fertilizer but sure enough\, even after they were forgotten and neglected for a couple months\, half showed up that summer as healthy plants! They are still here producing food and new plants over a decade later.\nWe have become passionate about sharing the surplus and we now have a small greenhouse set up for hardwood\, softwood and semi hardwood cuttings \nClass runs 10am to noon. Fee is $20 due at start of class\, payment accepted via cash\, Venmo\, Paypal\, Cashapp to Phatninjafoodforest. Classes are held rain or shine. Parking available next door at the Asheville Mennonite Church.

SUMMARY:Trial to Table - Spring Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Our Trial to Table events are a chance for us to showcase crops and varieties from our farm trials via the talented hands of local chefs. We challenge our chefs to be inspired by our farm trials and to be creative with their dishes. The food is always delicious and our hope is that you experience something new and begin to rethink what our regional food system can offer. \nOur Spring Celebration will focus on root flours and alternative seed flours. We grow achira\, yacon\, cassava\, ube\, yam\, sweet potato\, turmeric\, ginger\, arrowroot and more. All these tropical roots make great flours so we are bringing together bakers and pastry chefs to show off these crops! Expect something creative and delicious. \nTicket price includes two small plates from each chef (8 plates total). We’ll also be running a Utopian Seed Project tasting table to show off some of these ingredients in their pure form. A note on pricing transparency: we want these events to be as accessible as possible and so have a flexible pricing policy\, if you’re able to pay more than $50 then great\, if you can’t then that’s great to.
