DESCRIPTION:Learn about how our hogs are pasture raised from our farm director Virginia Hamilton. She will discuss heritage breeds\, health benefits of pasture raised pork and how various inputs on the production side that impact the quality of the meat. \nThis is a much smaller\, hands-on class with Butcher Brian\, meant for those who want to make sausage at home or on site from scratch. Our cutoff for this class is only 4 attendees! Each participant will break down their own pork shoulder for ingredients\, take part in making both ground and linked pork sausage. Our friend\, astronomer\, author & natural storyteller Stephan Martin will show you the bright and splendid starscape of a crispy February evening in the mountains. \nVenus\, Mars\, and Jupiter will be shining above as will the brightest stars in the night sky at the best time of year to see them. Steve will point out some of the most romantic things to see in the winter sky\, including the Great Nebula of Orion\, the Pleiades star cluster\, and the location of the beautiful Heart Nebula. We’ll share stories of some of the winter constellations including Orion\, Canis Major\, and the famous star-crossed lovers of Perseus and Andromeda. \nShow up early and hit the farm store to get snacked up! Hot cocoa\, hot cider\, hand warmers\, wine by the glass or bottle and charcuterie for you and your beloved. \nDress warmly\, snuggly big blankets for sitting on/wrapping up in are recommended\, good shoes for all weather to walk the grounds to your final destination. SUMMARY:Forest Farming Tour at Banks Mountain Forest Farm - featuring Horse Logging\, Silvopasture\, and Mushroom Production
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this rescheduled agroforestry tour at Banks Mountain Forest Farm in Hendersonville. Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc at the 37-acre property last September\, with some stands losing 70%. Hear from the intrepid farmers who are rewriting their forest management plan\, and working with their logging horse team to salvage merchantable timber. \nBob and Stuart Richens will lead a 1-mile walk through their diversified operation\, where they raise goats\, hogs\, chickens\, mushrooms\, Fraser fir and Norway spruce Christmas trees\, boutique timber\, and two rare breeds of farm dogs. Learn from their adaptive approach at this unique and beautiful mountaintop farm. \nRegistration is free but required.
