The Mountain Tailgate Market Association (MTMA) is
made up of the farmer and vendor only markets of Buncombe and Madison
counties in the southern
Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina. Formed in 2002,
the organization works collaboratively to promote the local markets,
fresh
food, and artisan crafts of the area's farmers, artists, bakers,
food processors, and other producers of the finest products made by
local
vendors.
The MTMA is happy to share the tools of collaboration that have made
their efforts a success. Funded through grants from Southern
SARE, the
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP),
the Risk
Management Agency (RMA) of the US Department of Agriculture, and
the North
Carolina Tobacco
Trust Fund Commission, the MTMA understands that spreading of resources
and lessons is a fundamental tool for spreading the message of fresh
food
and direct
farmer connections.
