There is so much that’s fresh at area farmers tailgate markets that the list is almost too long to mention! We’ve had a wonderful summer for produce, and vendors stands are surely reflecting that – every week they are piled high with delicious goods.
Apples are arriving at markets now. Thatchmore Farm (North Asheville Tailgate Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market) has a variety called Enterprise apples which are deliciously crispy and tart. Tom of Thatchmore Farm, labels these apples as “cosmetically challenged,” but don’t let their appearance fool you, these apples sure pack a punch of flavor! Tucker’s Garden (West Asheville Tailgate Market and North Asheville Tailgate Market) has multiple varieties of apple available including Florina, Red Delicious, and Asian pears!
Late summer is a wonderful time for potato salad, grilled potatoes, and more. Farms have so many varieties at markets these days including Sangre, Colorado Rose, and Nicola from Ivy Creek Family Farm (Weaverville Tailgate Market and North Asheville Tailgate Market) and Red Gold, Carola, Satina, Adirondack Red and Blue, and German Butterball from Mountain Harvest Organics (North Asheville Tailgate Market).
Want to add a burst of sauce and seasoning to your meal this week? Bee Tree Farm (French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market, Madison County Farmers Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market) reports that they have pesto and tomato sauce available, which would be delicious to eat with pasta from Rio Bertellini (Asheville City Market).
There’s so much more than apples, corn, and potatoes at market! Find beans, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuces, herbs, onions, garlic, tomatoes, breads, cheeses, artisan products, mushrooms, melons, meats, and more.
