ASAP’s Farm Tour is just days away and farmers are putting the finishing touches on their plans for this year’s tour. Here at Growing Local, we’ve put together a few mini audio adventures about different farms on the tour. This week we’ll take you to the Madison County cluster, just north of Asheville.
Zimmerman’s Berry Farm is back on the tour after a five year hiatus. The u-pick berry farm will have pick-your-own black raspberries, plus plenty of spots to picnic and a honey bee education activity for kids.
There are two other farms close by. Stop at Spinning Spider Creamery to see border collie herding demonstrations, then meet the farm’s baby goats and take a tour of the creamery.
East Fork Farm will have a food truck on site serving meat, eggs, and corn products from the farm. They’ll have a petting area set up and a farm quiz with prizes for kids.
Nearby Dry Ridge Farm is a beautiful place to take in views of Madison County. See sheep graze on the hillside and save room for a bratwurst made from the farm’s pork, served with seasonal ingredients from other farms on the tour.
Bring a cooler to take home berries, cheeses, pastured meats and free-range eggs from Madison County. Some of these farms are only open to the public during ASAP’s Farm Tour. It’s a once-a-year opportunity see the inner workings of these farms.
Farm Tour is this weekend, June 25th and 26th, 2016. Find tips for making the most of the tour and information on how to buy passes at www.asapconnections.org
