As the summer season continues to bring its bounty (eggplant, okra, and shishito peppers are all starting to make their way to markets now), we want to introduce two farmers tailgate markets new to Buncombe County this year.
Riverside Tailgate Market takes place Fridays from 4-7 pm, hosted by Zillicoah Brewing Company in Woodfin. Vendors line Zillicoah’s covered patio, and shoppers can alternate between shopping or relaxing with a beer.
For produce, you’ll generally find Lee’s One Fortune Farm, Myseanica Family Farm, and Seed of Life Farm, and for meats, Walnut Farms. There’s also bread (Lady in Bread), coffee (HeartSome Coffee), pasta (Rio Bertolini), ferments (Sweet Brine’d), herbal products (Wildkrafted Kitchen), soap (Balm Mountain Soap), plants and housewares (Roaming Rosarina), vermiculture (Johnny’s Got Worms), and more. On Thursdays, Enka-Candler Tailgate Market sets up in a field at 70 Pisgah Highway, about 1,000 feet from Smokey Park Highway, from 3:30-6:30pm. The market is operated by the nonprofit Asheville Farmstead School, and market proceeds benefit school and camp scholarships, as well as other local community outreach.
Rainbow Ridge Gardens at Asheville Farmstead School, Seeds of Thought Farm, Myseanica Family Farm, Heartstone Farm, and Jake’s Farm are there selling produce and more. HeadShrink Farms will offer Belted Galloway beef and olive oil. You’ll also find plants, herbs, soaps, and other artisan products from Pisgah Plants, Green River Botanicals, Soshua Creations, Home Again Homestead, Bonny Bath, 3 Nails Woodworking, SOLA School of Living Arts, and Huang Di: The Yellow Emperor Mobile Herbal First Aide Clinic. Treats and snacks are offered by Whisk Avl Bakery, Luscious Liquor Ice Cream, and Sun’s Out, Buns Out hotdog stand. Enka-Candler Tailgate Market will run through Sept. 26.
At markets throughout the region now, you’ll find an assortment of tomatoes, summer squash, beans, spring onions, cucumbers, new potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, greens of all sorts, beets, carrots, peaches, plums, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, honey, cheese, bread, meat, eggs, seafood, and much, more more.
