About Hedge Family Farm
Hedge Family Farm is a 1.5 acre Certified Naturally Grown, biointensive market garden, located in Happy Valley, approx 45 minutes from Boone and Hickory. We sell our fruits and vegetables at two farmer’s markets, to several chefs and restaurants, to the High Country Foodhub, and via our CSA.
Job Description
We are looking for farmers who are serious and passionate about farming as a career. This person’s role will be to execute daily farm tasks, work independently, and closely with farmers Mike and Sara Hedge.
Crew Positions
Crew member $12-15/hr (depending on experience)
Our farm has an evolving list of tasks which require problem solving, repetition, strength, endurance, focus, and purpose.
- 35-40 hours/week average, year-round,
- $20/week produce credit.
- Work days are normally M-F, Sat farmers market
- Start date: now
- 6 month commitment required
- 2 week paid trial period before full commitment
- Possible pay increase after 1 year

Duties
Execute critical weekly operations on the farm, including:
- Harvest (2-3 days/week) including washing and packing produce.
- Seeding, transplanting, and bed prep.
- Crop and general field maintenance: Pruning, broadforking, weeding, moving compost, mulching, trellising, assisting with farm events, etc.
- Cleaning: Washing bins, cleaning washpack,
- Setting work pace and being aware of time so we can complete our work in a reasonable timeframe.
- Keep a positive attitude, and supportive working environment on the farm.
Hours
- This is a full time, year-round position. Hours will be 40/week average, more in summer/fall, and less in winter/early spring.
- Flexible work week
- Work days do not have set start/finish times, though they will shift through the season based on temperature, daylight and tasks.
- November-March approx. work schedule: 10 AM – 4 PM
- April-October approx. work schedule: 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM, (Siesta), and 3 PM – 7 PM
Qualifications
- At least 18, with valid driver’s license, and legal US work status.
- Reliable transportation to and from the farm.
- Production farming experience: Ideally you will have worked full time for at least one full season on a production farm.
- Strong attention to detail. Able to see colors.
- Comfortably work kneeling, bending, and lifting 50+ pounds.
- Be able to work hard and efficiently in all weather.
- Good communication skills.
- Comfortable being on camera, as we continue to shoot for our youtube series.
- May not smoke, or do drugs.
