Amidst the hype of strawberries, more delicious new spring fruits and veggies continue to arrive at area farmers tailgate markets. Broccoli, rhubarb, garlic scapes, and snap peas are all making their debut.
The first broccoli has just been spotted! Find it from Ten Mile Farm (River Arts District Farmers Market and Asheville City Market), and soon to be at many more farms in the coming weeks. Additionally, farms including Gaining Ground Farm (North Asheville Tailgate Market and River Arts District Farmers Market) and Blue Ribbon Farm (Asheville City Market and River Arts District Farmers Market) have Chinese broccoli, which is similar in flavor to regular broccoli, but differs mostly in structure — it has a more narrow stalk, and wide, broad leaves. Expect additional farms to have broccoli available in the coming weeks.
Garlic scapes are here, too! Wonderful for adding to sautees, garlic scapes have a mild garlic flavor and crunchy texture. Stop by Root Bottom Farm’s table at West Asheville Tailgate Market to pick some up and give them a try.
Rhubarb, strawberries’ continual companion, is available from John’s Berry Patch (Asheville City Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market), as well as additional farms soon. Strawberries and rhubarb are a particularly perfect pair for pies!
Other fun finds? Snap peas from Thatchmore Farm (North Asheville Tailgate Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market) are a great snack for your lunch pack. Spring picnics with peanut butter and jelly would be great with jam from River Arts District Farmers Market’s new preserves vendor, Pick and Preserve.
Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. Check out the “2016 Tailgate Market Opening Dates” to find out when markets are opening up near you.
