Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

Spring is here! This past Tuesday marked the first day of the season, and that means we’re thinking about the upcoming outdoor farmers tailgate market openings!

North Asheville Tailgate Market and Asheville City Market both open April 7. West Asheville Tailgate Market opens April 10, and Asheville City Market – South begins April 4. Even more markets open throughout April and then even more in May! Check out the full list of market opening dates across the region.
In addition to the fresh produce farmers are bringing to market they also have plant starts for sale this time of year for you to grow your own. Wildwood Herbal and other farms will have plant starts this week at Asheville City Market. Expect more varieties of plant starts to be available as we move into spring. Purchasing plant starts from your local farmers is a great way to support them while saving on your food costs down the line. And, did you know that you can use SNAP/EBT to purchase plant starts?
You can also purchase seeds with SNAP/EBT. A recent episode of Growing Local discusses the benefit of buying seeds grown locally.  And find the markets in the region that accept SNAP/EBT.
Winter farmers markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
