This spring has been a hard one for farmers. Cold temperatures, high winds, and frozen precipitation have caused farmers to devise resourceful ways of protecting their fledgling plants. In the face of these conditions, farmers at tailgate markets may have a different haul of veggies than they may have intended to at the start of the season. ASAP’s radio series, Growing Local, featured the opening of markets by visiting Asheville City Market and interviewing farmers and shoppers, and, to quote one market shopper, “It’s fun to see the farmers… it’s like going back to summer camp, someplace you go every summer, but you only see people during that time frame, so it’s a good feeling, a good homecoming.”
A whole new round of markets are opening with the start of May: Black Mountain Tailgate Market, East Asheville Tailgate Market, Oakley Farmers Market, and River Arts District Farmers Market, not to mention all the markets outside of Buncombe County opening across the region.
