Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

Memorial Day is this weekend! We’ve seen plenty of rain the past few weeks, so this could be your weekend to get out the grill. Find an abundance of local fixins at area farmers tailgate markets to toss on the grill or to make into yummy entrees and sides for your weekend festivities.

If you decide to grill meat, both Reeves Home Place Farm (West Asheville Tailgate Market) and Dry Ridge Farm (West Asheville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market, River Arts District Farmers Market) can provide your cookout with all kinds of beef, chicken, pork, and more.
Grilled asparagus is always a crowd favorite. McConnell Farms (North Asheville Tailgate Market, West Asheville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market) still has asparagus, but get it now as this early spring specialty is going away soon.
As for side items, all kinds of greens are available at market. Siberian kale, bok choi, red Russian kale are all featured at vendors’ tables. Want to add a little kick to your salad? Try dandelion greens from Bear Necessities Farm (West Asheville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market, Asheville City Market – South) and Wildwood Herbal Plants & Produce (Weaverville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market). Experiment with a dandelion green wilted salad and toss on some local strawberries and bacon.
Also perfect for warmer weather is the return of tomatoes! Their early season return is brought to you by Thatchmore Farm (West Asheville Tailgate Market, North Asheville Tailgate Market) and McConnell Farms.
Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. Check out the full list of spring market opening dates across the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
