Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

There are the faintest whispers of fall already, such as a few crisp, chilly mornings. At area farmers tailgate markets, those whispers are coming in the form of some of the first fall produce. Last week we talked about the delicata and kuri winter squash. And this week, there’s more fall fare making its way to market.

The very first sweet potatoes have arrived from Lee’s One Fortune Farm (Asheville City Market, Asheville City Market – South, East Asheville Tailgate Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market). These Japanese purple sweet potatoes, so early in the season, are great grilled whole. Then cut in half and add a smidgen of butter, a sprinkle of salt, and your favorite fresh herb chopped finely.

There are more varieties of winter squash at market this week, including butternut squash as well as spaghetti squash. Spaghetti squash has been limitedly available from local farms, but it’s looking like this year perhaps there might be more. For now, visit Root Bottom Farm at West Asheville Tailgate Market for this incredible ingredient.

McConnell Farms has late season strawberries and rhubarb right now! These spring treats are making an unexpected comeback, so get ‘em while you can. Stop by McConnell Farms at North Asheville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market.

Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
