Pick a pepper, any pepper at area farmers tailgates this week! Nearly every market reports peppers on their produce list now—from sweet bells to spicy jalapenos.
Not sure if what’s on display is sweet or spicy? Don’t be afraid to ask your farmer, as shape and size aren’t always indicators. For example, Brittain Farms has been offering up banana peppers. They look like they might be on the spicy side but really have a mild, tangy taste. Find Brittain at French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market, Mills River Farmers Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market.
Pick up peaches and nectarines, too, which seem to be getting bigger and juicier thanks to the summer sun. One young market shopper picked out the plumpest peach she could find from McConnell Farms at Asheville City Market Downtown last weekend (pictured). “I’ve never seen a peach this big before!” she exclaimed. Find McConnell additionally at Asheville City Market South, North Asheville Tailgate Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market. Sweet corn, okra, eggplants, beans, breads, cheeses, onions, eggs, garlic, and meats also await a trip home in your market basket.
And, of course, take home tomatoes. They appear to be peaking now, with an array of colors and a nice selection of varieties available. Many markets are celebrating maters this week. Montford Farmers Market is hosting a Tomato Tasting on Wednesday, August 7, from 2 until 6 pm. The event will feature a cooking demo and chance to taste different types of tomatoes. North Asheville Tailgate Market will host their tomato tasting on Saturday, August 10. And also on August 10, Asheville City Market Downtown plays host to our Tomato Festival. The first 200 attendees will receive a free event t-shirt, and everyone will receive a free recipe booklet. There will also be a live cooking demo from The Market Place‘s owner and executive chef, William Dissen, and the chance to vote for your favorite variety. The event runs 8 am-1 pm; click link for more details.
Saturday, August 10, is also the last day of Buy Haywood’s EBT/SNAP promotion at Jackson County Farmers Market. Swipe your food stamp card for as little as $1 and receive a coupon good for $5 worth of fresh fruits and veggies. Asheville City Market’s $5 for $5 SNAP promotion continues through the end of the month. August is also the final month for ASAP’s Growing Minds @ Market activities at Asheville City Market, North Asheville Tailgate Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market.
