Fresh at (Winter) Farmers Markets This Week

Attention, attention! This is your apple alert! You knew fall’s apples couldn’t last forever, and the time has come for them to say goodbye and make way for the spring bounty on its way (it’s okay to start daydreaming of asparagus and strawberries now; we have!).

Creasman Farms should have apples this Saturday and maybe next at Asheville City Market (AMC) downtown and the Neighborhood Y at Woodfin Winter Tailgate Market. But they are running low. So, stock up (snag apple butter and other value-added apple goodies, too), and as you’re shopping, be sure to ask your farmers directly about their timeline.
Jake’s Farm will be back at both markets mentioned above with veggies from A to Z: arugula, bok choy, celery, chard, cilantro, kale, lemongrass, and turnips. If you were looking for beets under B above, bop over to Green River Picklers‘ booth at ACM downtown on Saturday. Last weekend, they introduced their new pickled beets, which are quickly becoming a big hit.
When it comes to produce at the Jackson County Farmers Market winter tailgate, expect carrots, winter squash, turnips, and garlic. If your child’s a veggie lover, swing them by the market’s new face painting booth for a cute carrot on their cheek. And note that the Madison County Indoor Winter Market happens this weekend with new hours: 10 am-1 pm. Visit their Facebook page for more details.
Emilous Homestyle GoodsIf you’re ready to shop at a market now, remember that several vendors brave the cold each Friday in front of the French Broad Food Co-op. Head over there this afternoon for a few veggies, meats, and some downright delectable sweet treats from Emilou’s Homestyle Goods (shown here).
And don’t forget another weekday market: Asheville City Market South in Biltmore Park Town Square. We’re hearing vendors there like Gladheart Farm are really bringing the bounty—everything from butternut squash to cabbage and collards to green onions.
