Baby, it’s cold outside and area farmers markets have the goods to keep you warm. Hearty, starchy, baked goods will do the trick, and at market, cookies, cakes, tarts, turnovers and breads abound!
Try bread from Wake Robin Farm Bread at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market, baked on a sixth generation farm. Another YMCA Market vendor, Farm & Sparrow Bread, uses stone-ground flour milled on-site. You can have your breakfast at the YMCA Market, from Home Free Bagels, which provides GMO/corn/soy-free barley malt bagels. Home Free’s mission is to provide employment opportunities for the homeless by employing them to bake and sell their bagels. Another Asheville favorite – Simple Bread at Asheville City Market, really is just that simple – classic french sourdough breads, including wheat, rye, seeded, and baguettes.
Looking for something that will make the snow seem like a bad dream at best? Prepared baked goods like cakes, cookies, and scones are the way to go. Sweetheart Bakery incorporates local vegetables in savory tarts, turnovers, and scones. Sweetheart isn’t without sweet options, though – the shortbread is incredible! Home Is Where The Heart Is Bakery has all gluten-free baked goods – not too sweet, but they still absolutely hit the spot! Both of these vendors can be found at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market.
Confections of a Cotton Pickin’ Queen at Asheville City Market has an array of traditional Southern cookies based on family recipes. One particularly notable item is cheese kicks- spicy round cheesy baked goods! Confections is a mother-daughter run business, named after their beauty queen grandmother. Also at Asheville City Market, Delectable Delights has a wide range of cakes and sweets; tried and true favorites as well as daring new flavors.
