Fresh at (Winter) Farmers Markets This Week

Look for lettuces this weekend at area winter farmers markets! Jake’s Farm hopes to bring the crunchy salad necessity with them Saturday to Asheville City Market (ACM) downtown and the Neighborhood Y at Woodfin Winter Tailgate Market. They also expect to bring bok choy, and they’ve even begun talking broccoli, which should be available in the coming weeks. Kay Farm offered up lotsa lettuce last Saturday at ACM, so get it again this weekend while the getting’s good.

Didn’t get the sweets from your sweetie you were hoping for this Valentine’s? Swing by Rachel’s Delectables’ booth at ACM for tiramisu minis, sweet potato and pumpkin cheesecake, and Pisgah Blueberry Wheat beer cheesecake. Rachel shares that she’ll soon create savory cheesecakes featuring local items such as Sunburst Farms’ trout and peppers from Smoking J’s Fiery Foods & Farm.
We hear it’s supposed to be chilly this weekend, so grab some coffee to warm up with from Asheville Coffee Roasters at the Woodfin market or Biltmore Coffee Traders at ACM; they’ve got a new type of Brazilian bean called peaberry, which is said to roast remarkably. If tea’s your thing, grab some from Wendy Lippman Teas and Botanicals at the Woodfin Y tailgate along with some local honey from Wild Mountain Apiaries—available at both Woodfin and ACM.
Despite this weekend’s forecast, it has been feeling rather spring-like. If you’re motivated to get a start on spring cleaning, visit vendors like Shecology that offer eco-friendly cleaning products. Shecology offers laundry pills, soap nuts, and other supplies at the Woodfin market and will be happy to give you a crash course on soap nuts if you swing by.
Note that the Jackson County Farmers Market has rescheduled its Winter Garden Workshop with Adam Bigelow; the new date is February 23 at 2 pm in the Sylva Community Garden. Bigelow will demonstrate techniques and methods of season extension, including row covers, low-tunnels, spring planting, and more. Cost is $5 per person to benefit the market, and kids are free. Tickets are available this Saturday at the tailgate at the Community Table, 10 am-1 pm.
