Fresh at [Winter] Farmers Markets this Week

Don’t let the season fool you – each week is still slightly different at area winter farmers tailgate markets. Although winter produce has little variety throughout the season, the markets still do; new vendors appear, and what they have available for sale can certainly change from week to week.
Expect an additional produce vendor at Asheville City MarketSecond Spring Market Garden is gearing up to start attending in the coming weeks. They just began growing on a new plot of land, and plan to introduce Asheville’s first 52 week produce CSA this coming spring.
Joe from Paper Crane Farm was absent last Saturday at Asheville City Market because he went on vacation, but expect him back at market this week with greens and root veggies such as carrots and beets. Jake’s Farm will be there every week with greens and herbs, as well as Creasman Farms with apples.
Two vendors at Asheville City Market alternate from week to week, giving way to a changing landscape of availability: La Gringa Tamalera and Shecology. Make sure to stock up for two weeks worth of tamales when you see them!
Mountain Juicery at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market has a Farmers Special juice that rotates based on availability and features produce from local farmers. See what the special is this week.
Feeling nutty? Stop by John’s Berry Patch at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market for black walnuts. Black walnuts have a more potent flavor than the English walnuts most consumers are familiar with and are wonderful addition to baking. Native to our region, but a tough nut to crack (literally) – take advantage of this opportunity to try an Appalachian delicacy.
Flying Fish CSA, also at the YMCA market, has some wonderful produce for sale, including sunchokes and green onions. Sunchokes are a crisp root vegetable that are wonderful raw in salads or roasted with herbs. Green onions add a super flavor to whatever you cook them with- you can even include them in your roasted sunchokes!
Don’t forget about the markets outside of Buncombe county! Next Saturday, February 7 is Spruce Pine’s monthly winter market at The Pizza Shop and Dry County Brewing Company. And every Saturday you can find delightful goods at the Jackson and Transylvania markets.
