Market season really starts swinging in April, but there are plenty of markets during the winter months!
This past Saturday, shoppers lined up early before Asheville City Market even opened to get their hands on greens. Specifically, they wanted produce courtesy of Jake’s Farm. Jakes’ bok choy was sold out early as well as the Swiss chard. Kale was also in high demand.
What else is in high demand at Asheville City Market? Try microgreens from Rock Spring Garden, apples from Creasman Farms (pictured above), and eggs from Dry Ridge Farm. And don’t forget pickles! Green River Picklers is an Asheville City Market staple, both in the winter and summer. Among the products that Green River Picklers have for sale are Willy’s Dilly’s, Spicy Appalachian Okra, Blue Ridge Beets, and more. Green River Picklers source from a number of different local farms, including Blue Meadow Farms, also a vendor at the winter Asheville City Market. When the growing season arrives, they have a variety of limited edition pickles at tailgate markets, such as: ramps, bamboo, garlic scapes, spring onions, watermelon rind, and kale.
Over at the Jackson County Farmers Market, there will be a Fundraising Brunch for the market on March 15, from 10 am to 1 pm. The brunch will include local sausage and egg biscuits. The Backwoods Bakery and Cakeworks will prepare the biscuits; Trillium Farms will provide the pork for sausage; eggs are courtesy of Shared Blessings Farm; and plenty of other farms will participate. Stay tuned to the Jackson County Farmers Market website and Facebook page for more information.
