There is so much ingenuity that our local farmers employ in order to consistently have produce throughout the harsh winter conditions over the past few weeks. Be it through alternative growing practices like hydroponics, or attentively caring for greenhouse plants as if they are newborns, farms still have produce to bring to area winter farmers tailgate markets. All those veggies still go quickly, though, so get to market early.
At Asheville City Market, Jake’s Farm has a whole lot of greens: romaine, kale, arugula, spinach, lettuce mix, radishes, and more. Also, Creasman Farms has a large assortment of tasty apples, including dried apple rings.
The YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market is packed full of farmers with a variety of produce. Green Rows Hydro Farm has bibb and romaine lettuce. Find microgreens and kale from John’s Berry Patch. Get mixed greens and potatoes from Meadow Cove Farm or visit New Moon Herbs Farm for collards, lettuce, and butternut squash. Stop by Flying Fish CSA to grab some green onions, kale, sunchokes, and turnips.
That’s not all! L.O.T.U.S Urban Farm and Garden Supply has bibb and romaine lettuce, as well as kalette — a new hybrid vegetable, combining kale and brussel sprouts! They also have fresh basil, which is wonderful for making pesto. Don’t forget the garlic, which you can also get from L.O.T.U.S at market. Try using black walnuts from John’s Berry Patch as a local alternative to pine nuts.
There are a couple of once-a-month markets coming up soon: Bakersville Farmers Market will be on Saturday March 14 at the Bakersville Community Medical Clinic parking lot. Winter Sun CSA Market will be on Wednesday March 11 at Blue Ridge Food Ventures on the AB Tech Campus.
Can’t get to one of the farmers markets on Saturday? Look for the Appalachian Grown logo at your favorite grocery store to find authentically local produce throughout the year.
