Fresh at Winters Farmers Markets This Week

Winter tailgate markets abound with local farm products! What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day next week than to get some greens from your local farmer?
You can find all kinds of greens at markets, including lettuce mix, kale, baby mustard greens, baby arugula, bok choy, microgreens, and more. The Woodfin YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market reports that they have several greens vendors to choose from. To complement your greens, try some hand-ground cornmeal from Bee Tree Farm for all kinds of baking goodies. The Woodfin YMCA is partnering with Meadow Cove Farm for the Shiitake Mushroom Inoculation Workshop at the farm on April 5. You can sign up for the workshop at the Woodfin market.
Other winter markets happening this week include mini-markets that are affiliated with Blue Ridge Food VenturesWinter Sun Farms CSA. Winter Sun Farms is a winter CSA that takes fresh produce from local farms during the growing season, and then preps, packages, and freezes it so that you can get local produce during the winter.
Mini-farmers markets will take place at the CSA pick-up locations this week. Blue Ridge Food Ventures will host a mini-market this Wednesday, March 12, 9 am-1 pm and 4-7 pm. Arden’s River View Farms will be selling pork. You can also find poultry and duck eggs from Brittain Farms in Mills River. Other Winter Sun Farms pick-up sites with mini-markets this week include the Grow Down Home Winter Market in Black Mountain and the site of the Flat Rock Tailgate Market.
The Jackson County Farmers Market is beginning its Shed Your Change Campaign. Market customers will have a chance to donate their loose change in order to raise funds for a new storage shed for the market. The Jackson County Farmers Market continues indoors through the month of March each Saturday, 10 am -1 pm at the Community Table in downtown Sylva. Greens, sprouts, eggs, pork, herbs and spices, coffee, baked goods, and many fine crafted items are for sale.
