What’s Fresh at Tailgate Markets

The beginning of spring is here and there’s buzz about outdoor tailgate markets opening up at long last! But before they do open, be sure to stop by the last of the indoor winter markets this week.
Whether it’s an outdoor or indoor market, there’s plenty of fresh farm products at markets these days. At Asheville City Market, greens from Jake’s Farms continue to be popular. In fact, they’ve been in such demand that Jake’s has a “take a number” dispenser so that no will be short-changed. Jake’s has lettuce mix, mustard greens, kale, and more. Ivy Creek Family Farm also had greens at Asheville City Market including much spinach and a braising mix. Want to grow some plants yourself? At Asheville City Market, Finally Farm has starts for sale, ready to be planted in your garden or as a little green for your windowsill.
One vendor that you’ll find at indoor and outdoor markets over the next few weeks is Spinning Spider Creamery. They are currently selling five different chevres at markets as well as feta and their Montford Jack. Also sample and buy their bloomy rind cheeses – Silver Belle and Midnight Sun. Want something sweet from Spinning Spider? Try their Carmela, a Mexican caramel sauce made with goat milk.
The Jackson County Farmers Market will hold its last indoor market of the season this Saturday at the Community Table. The following Saturday, they move to their outdoor location in Sylva’s Bridge Park. The Jackson County Farmers Market will host a square dance and silent auction fundraiser, 6-9 pm this Saturday at 492 West Main Street in downtown Sylva. The square dance will be called by NC State Representative Joe Sam Queen and Out of the Woodwork will be playing music. Admission is loose change or $5.
