Winter farmers tailgate markets are heating up! Saturday marks the second Neighborhood Y at Woodfin Winter Tailgate Market (10 am-12:30 pm), and we hear vendors will move outdoors thanks to the forecast of a near 70-degree day.
The first Woodfin Y market was a big success. Farms like Flying Cloud Farm and Wildwood Herbal brought sweet potatoes, cabbages, turnips and greens. Cheese vendors like Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery, Spinning Spider Creamery and Three Graces Dairy offered up their specialties. There was bread, pasta, maple syrup, apples, sweet treats and the list goes on. Coordinator Diane Saccone expects at least four new vendors this weekend, including the Wild Salmon Co. and Ivy Creek Family Farm with more fresh produce.
Warm weather is music to the ears of the intrepid vendors who have been braving the cold outside the French Broad Food Co-op on Fridays. Last week, Beulah Farm, OakMoon Farm, Which Came First Farm and Jake’s Farm bundled up to offer beef, chicken, cheese, eggs and more. Stay tuned to the Co-op’s or Wednesday Tailgate Market’s Facebook pages for who’ll be there this week.
Wednesday, January 9, marked the first winter Asheville City Market South (11 am-3 pm), held in its new winter location at 28 Schenck Parkway in Biltmore Park Town Square (the lobby of Western Carolina University’s satellite campus). Gladheart Farm offered produce from carrots to greens to winter squash; they’ll bring fresh veggies all winter long.
The very first winter Asheville City Market downtown happens this Saturday, January 12, from 10 am to 1 pm in the atrium of the Haywood Park Hotel. Expect lots of vendors from the market’s regular season. Find produce from farms like Kay Farm and Blue Meadow Farms; meats/trout from East Fork Farm, Dry Ridge Farm, Hominy Valley Farms, and Sunburst Trout Farms; cheeses, eggs, baked goods, and even pottery.
Live west of Asheville? Head to the Jackson County Farmers Market (10 am-1 pm) indoor tailgate Saturday at the Community Table ready to order seeds for spring! Expert growers will be there to help and gather requests for discounted group orders with Fedco and Johnny’s Selected Seeds. Catalogues will be available. Of course, also come with your market tote to fill with veggies, meats and handcrafted items.
