Fresh at Winters Farmers Markets This Week

February is here, and winter farmers tailgate markets are going strong! What can you find at a winter market? Plenty of farm products are offered, including cabbage, sweet potatoes, apples, eggs, cheese, and local meats.
Speaking of local meat, Razor Mountain Heritage Breeds is featuring pork sausage and other cuts at the Woodfin YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market. Another local farm selling meat at the Woodfin market is East Fork Farm. One shopper reports that they offer an amazing variety of meat cuts. And what goes well with local meat? Try Meadow Cove Farm’s chimichurri spice rub! Along with their spice rub, Meadow Cove Farm has dried hot peppers and dried Shiitake mushrooms for sale. We previously reported on McConnell Farms’ hanging strawberry baskets available at the Woodfin market. With Valentine’s Day coming right around the corner, this spring goodie would make a great gift for a special someone!
One hot winter market vendor is Rock Spring Gardens. They have been selling their microgreens at the Woodfin YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market all winter, and they will make their first appearance at Asheville City Market on Saturday, February 8. Their microgreens selection include pea shoots, a mild mix (including kale, broccoli, Mizuna greens, and tatsoi), and a spicy mix (including radish, mustard, and arugula). All of their greens are grown vertically in an indoor growing room. You can find Rock Spring Gardens at tailgate markets, as well as at Healthy Harvest Natural Foods and Food Matters Market in Brevard and the Hendersonville Community Co-op.
The Jackson County Farmers Market reports that they have plenty of veggies for sale, including greens and sprouts. You will also see eggs, coffee, herbal remedies, soaps, and crafts. The market features a Market Library with DVDs and books available to Friends of the Market. Sylva Sprouts, the Portable Seed Lending Library, is vending regularly, and they are stocked with seeds for spring planting. This Saturday, February 8, the market will be making handmade paper using recycled paper.
There are plenty of other winter markets open now. For a list of these markets, visit the farmers market section of asapconnections.org or at ASAP’s online farmers market calendar.
