Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

There’s at least one hue of every color represented at area farmers tailgate markets. Farmers’ booths are vibrant and polychromatic. There’s a saying that goes: “Eat your colors.” Variety in the colors of your diet, may or may not live up to this advice, but it sure will make your fridge drawers look beautiful!
Purple: Fairytale eggplants in light purples, Italian eggplant in deep, dark purples, purple basil, Cherokee purple tomatoes, and even purple bell peppers.
Blue: Blueberries, blue potatoes, and blue Bachelor’s Button flowers. Though the potatoes looks more purple than blue, and the flowers aren’t vegetables or fruits, both are blue, if only by name.
Green: Oh so many stunning green items at market, they all can’t be mentioned here! To name but a few: okra, shoshito, jalepeno, and bell peppers, collards, cilantro, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, green beans — an overflowing bounty of vert variations!
Yellow: Cantaloupe, peaches, yellow summer squashes, aji dulche peppers (like habeneros with much less heat), yellow cherry tomatoes, and though perhaps sometimes overlooked amidst the other bright things, yellow onions.
Orange: Sweet bell peppers — which, depending on who you ask, some folks will tell you they’re the sweetest of the bell peppers — heirloom tomatoes, and of course, you can’t think of orange without mentioning carrots.
Red: Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. As well as red okra, red peppers, red potatoes, and did we say tomatoes?
Visit a farmers market near you to see if you can find every color in fruit or veggies, and discover the many items not listed above.
Summer is eventful, and ASAP’s community calendar at fromhere.org has food and farm events for the whole family, including many at farmers markets.
In less than two weeks, ASAP’s is hosting a fundraising event: the Local Food Experience. Join ASAP on August 18, to meet the people changing our food system and taste the flavors of summer in the mountains, one bite at a time.
Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. Find out where farmers tailgate markets are on which days. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting our online Local Food Guide.
