Outdoor farmers tailgate markets are finally here! The following area tailgate markets will open this week: Asheville City Market (Saturday, April 5), Asheville City Market South (Wednesday, April 2), French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market (Wednesday, April 2), Henderson County Tailgate Market (Saturday, April 5), Jackson County Farmers Market (Saturday, April 5), Leicester Farmers Market (Saturday, April 5), Madison County Farmers & Artisans Market (Saturday, April 5), North Asheville Tailgate Market (Saturday, April 5), and the West Asheville Tailgate Market (Tuesday, April 8).
What can you find at the opening of markets? All sorts of tailgate market goodies including greens, cheeses, local meats, pickles, jams, bread, eggs, honey, savory and sweet treats, and handcrafted artisan items. You’ll be able to get greens in non-traditional ways too. At the French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market, Bee Tree Farm will be selling six different types of pesto such as a traditional pesto, vegan, and basil combinations with stinging nettle, cilantro, spinach, and kale. Bee Tree will also have salsa, scuppernong juice, blueberry preserves, and hummus. Bee Tree Farm owner Ron Gagliano says, “These are all ways that I try to get my produce out there without having to wait for June or July.”
Gladheart Farm also vends at the French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market. They’ll be selling their “green drink” – an all-organic drink with a variety of kales, collards, and swiss chard mixed with organic orange, apple, and grapefruit juice. The green drink will feature an even wider variety of greens as we get deeper into the season. Also find granola and sweet potato cupcakes from Gladheart.
You’ll find plenty of greens at the Henderson County Tailgate Market. Oliver Organiks will be selling swiss chard, kale, and herbs as well as an assortment of plants. Hills Farm will have cabbage, kale, lettuces, and chards. Pick up some local hummus with your greens courtesy of Hendersonville’s own Tito’s Specialty Foods.
