If you’re the type to serve your sweetheart a locally sourced Valentine’s Day meal, take note that you’ll need to stop at a farmers tailgate market tomorrow or Wednesday to collect ingredients in time for Feb. 14. Pretty much any meal you shop for and prepare yourself hits the mark for a romantic gesture, but we’ve included a few suggestions to really get into the spirit.
The runt of the fall produce litter is a big dog these days at area farmers markets! We’re talking about the typically tiny radish, an oft-overlooked root veggie that comes in a surprising number of varieties and sizes that are taking over tailgate tables now. (PS: It’s Get Local root veggie month, so also look for beets, turnips, and lots more.)
Cuckoo for crucifers? You’re cordially invited to a cabbage family reunion at area farmers tailgate markets this week! Most members—including broccoli, arugula, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, daikon and other radishes, and bok choy—are at the party now; expect Brussels sprouts soon.
Fall may be settling in, but some summer veggies—from peppers to beans—can still be found this week at area farmers tailgate markets. There has even been a surge of green tomatoes recently. Unfortunately, the surge actually means winter is nipping at our heels. A hard freeze that will put an end to tomato plants is on its way. So, farmers are bringing any unripe ‘maters to market now. Snap them up while you can; they’ll be gone by the end of the month.
