Winter farmers markets offer more variety than ever these days, thanks to innovative farmers and shopper demand, but this end-of-winter season can still start to feel like a sea of winter greens and radishes. But if you were looking closely, you might have noticed a few less common items on market tables in the past few weeks.

This time of year is all about vibrant displays of winter squash, pumpkins, apples, and other fall superstars at farmers tailgate markets. Late summer’s abundance continues through these chillier days, and most vendors are loaded up with dark leafy greens like collards, chard, and kale; root veggies like beets, carrots, and turnips; and tubers like sweet potatoes and potatoes. But there are also a few less-common items we’ve spotted over the past few weeks that deserve to be sought out as well.

Farmers, especially those here in our region, are remarkable. They’re up against so many odds, and they still deliver the most exquisite — in both flavor and aesthetics — produce, meats, cheeses, and more to area farmers tailgate markets each week. Right now we are, and have been, experiencing severe drought conditions, and our farmers are still showing up to markets, abundance in hand. When at a market this week, be sure to tell your farmers thank you.

Area farmers tailgate markets continue to open outside for spring this week. In Buncombe County, Asheville City Market- South opened this past Wednesday (April 6) and Weaverville Tailgate Market and French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market both begins next Wednesday (April 13). There is so much ingenuity that our local farmers employ in order to consistently have produce throughout the harsh winter conditions over the past few weeks. Be it through alternative growing practices like hydroponics, or attentively caring for greenhouse plants as if they are newborns, farms still have produce to bring to area winter farmers tailgate markets. All those veggies still go quickly, though, so get to market early.

Don’t let the season fool you – each week is still slightly different at area winter farmers tailgate markets. Although winter produce has little variety throughout the season, the markets still do; new vendors appear, and what they have available for sale can certainly change from week to week.

A new and exciting item has popped up at area farmers tailgate markets this week: popcorn from Full Sun Farm (River Arts District Farmers Market, North Asheville Tailgate Market). All types of corn will pop to some degree, but popcorn-specific varieties have a hard enough shell around the kernel that causes pressure to build up and explode inside out. Full Sun Farm sells their popcorn on the cob. Pick the kernels off and cook on your stovetop, or place the whole cob in a paper bag in the microwave and the kernels will pop off straight from the cob!
